The brand-spanking new trailer for the sequel to 2009’s G.I.Joe: Rise of Cobra has been released and it looks… um ok, I guess.

The G.I.Joe: Retaliation trailer hit the web earlier this week and I’m kind of up in the air on how it looks.

The opening tells you that the entire Joe team is almost completely wiped out by a surprise attack, and only a handful are left (kinda sounds like the story behind the first Mission Impossible film, when that awesome franchise turned annoyingly from a team doing a mission- to essentially James Bond- doing stuff alone). Now that really pisses me off right out of the gate. Though one can argue that having scores of Joe characters to choose from, this is a good way to eliminate having to setup and intro dozens of different characters that would be on the “Joe” team.

But I hope it isn’t a cop-out. We got Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as “Roadblock” and at the end of the preview Bruce Willis shows up over a green-screen, as “General Joseph Colton”, a character that wasn’t even in the original series, only first appearing in the comics (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing; The comic series became quite literally amazing in it’s run, and this author highly suggests picking it up and working passed the first 10-20 issues before it hits its stride).

It looks like we got alot of “Snake-Eyes” versus “Storm-Shadow” and a ton of other ninja stuff.

It also appears they are taking a page from the 1986 G.I.Joe: The Movie storyline, where they pick up  ‘new’ characters “Jinx” and maybe also “Tunnel-Rat”(listed in the credits).

So it could be good.

I was one of the few it seems who actually didn’t hate the last movie; I thought it knew what it was and worked within its boundries (and I have to say Sienna Miller made the hottest “Baroness” I’ve ever seen), and was leagues better than the sister franchise’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen from the same year (Really, how do you make a bad Transformers movie? Really?!).

But no Sienna Miller this time around; and even though I think I saw him in the trailer, IMDB.com lists no actor as “Cobra Commander” or “Destro” for that matter.

I know it’s stupid to admit, especially in the world of movies today, but I’m the kind of guy that likes a certain amount of ‘suspension of disbelief’ in my films, meaning if I see something, I hope it’s presented in such a way that I can halfway believe it on the big-screen (this is why sadly I have problems with certain films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, etc.. where you have all this “wire-fu” and people leaping on and off lillies and daisies).

In the last shot of the trailer, what looks like “Snake-Eyes” and “Jinx” are hanging from the side of a mountain and fighting ninjas while jumping around with a sword in one hand and a rope in the other. Everyone just runs by each other, crossing each other’s ropes… I hope I’m not just nit-picking when I say I hope the movie is actually good. Is it too much to ask that this turns out to be actually a good movie? Is it?

Keep your fingers crossed…
